Mentallo And The Fixer & Associated Projects [Benestrophe, Mainesthai, Polyhedron] : A Collection Of Rare, Unreleased & Remastered (4 x CD) [2012]

Brainchild of the two Texan brothers Gary and Dwayne Dassing,
Mentallo & The Fixer is definitely one of the most influential
American electro/industrial bands of the last 20 years. Highly
emotional and complex, their music is characterized by snarling
distorted vocals, hard cutting sequencer rhythms and a
thunderous beat.
After a catharsis of another 5 years of silent isolation, the
brothers are now offering their faithful "old-school" fanbase a
massive special 4-disc box set, gathering over 50 tracks: mostly
exclusive/previously unreleased material spanning throughout the
years back to 1987 until 1996. There is much from the Zoth Ommog
era and even prior to that. The set also includes several side-
projects, from Polyhedron through Mainesthai or yet the first
full length Benestrophe demo tapes, much of which has never been
released or even heard.

Much on these 4 discs is yet unheard or released, taken from the
artists' private collection of old master tapes and fully
remastered, re-edited and amplified by Gary Dassing... The
perfect present for the die hards and collectors making the
hardcopy much much more special in the days of downloads. Music
as medicine for generations to come!

Skin Area : Rothko Field [2012]

I’ve known and enjoyed IRM-related project Skin Area’s work for a good many years. They excel in extreme, punishing noise and Power Electronics coupled with a Dark Ambient sensibility for sonic dynamics. This third album, now on Malignant Records, is something of a departure for them; while no less intense in concept or execution, this album journeys through No-Wave drone guitar noise with the solemnity of Black Metal, droning electronic waves, Industrial pounding, delicate melody, Power Electronics shouted vocals and softly-sung words.

So it’s not a stretch to say this is a deeply interesting album, a journey, a passage through a series of mental states and situations. Moving through the fields of influence of abstract sensations? Rothko is the kind of artist to evoke these wildly separated but fractally connected sensations; his imposing, overpowering blocks of colour that bore right into you, particularly in his commission pieces for the Four Seasons restaurant, match these monolithic but changeable feelings.

Ulf Söderberg : Vindarnas Hus [2002]

Ulf Söderberg is best known for his project Sephiroth, with the excellent album “Cathedron” which came out on Cold Meat a few years ago. Ulf also released two cd’s under his own name before that, both very nice albums. Now a new, third Ulf Söderberg album has become available, released by Ulfs own label Slow Moon. The songs on it were recorded and produced between 2000 and 2002. For this album Ulf was aided by a musician called Anders Hagberg. I can’t give much more information, because the booklet is completely in Swedish.

Objective reviewers would probably complain that there is not much innovation and surprise on this new album. The compositions and sound on “Vindarnas Hus” resemble Ulfs previous albums closely. But I happen to like his style a lot, so I don’t mind one more typical Söderbergh album, and this is certainly a strong continuation. The key to many songs is the dynamic alternation of atmospheric, tranquil parts and sudden energetic outbursts. The ambient passages convey a rather solemn, sacred mood, enhanced by the nature sounds which are used throughout the electronic framework. The tension is often slowly built up, followed by irrestible climaxes, just as in Sephiroths ‘hit’ ‘Wolftribes’. The faster parts have a strong sense of urgence, they are very primary and tribal, with overwhelming percussion. They give you the feeling of a herd of wild animals which has suddenly broken loose. Untill now the third track, Neapolis’, is my favourite of the album.

As I said, this album is not full of surprises, but from the first tones onward there is a pleasant feel of familiarity. The softer, ambient parts are moving, while the sudden, tribal parts make you move. I still love this blend of serene ambient, filled with lovely nature sounds, creating a somewhat religious feel, and the ‘ethnic’ percussion driven by instincts.

Greyhound_Prototype III (excerpt)

Greyhound : Prototype [2012]

Greyhound present their 5th album in eight years, and they have surely achieved to become a household name in the Rhythm ’n’ Noise scene. They stand for almost orthodox, as-hard-as-rocks tracks which they produce with remarkable consistency, and for their remorseless sound they are celebrated regulars at festivals like Forms of Hands or Maschinenfest. “Prototype” is of course a self-reflective album title, as Greyhound are very specific about their concepts. It is an album about interpersonal communication and mental pressure up to the individual limits, thus it is the reflection of personal experiences, memories and emotions collected over of a year’s time. This information is enciphered in 15 intensely powerful, aggressive Rhythm ’n’ Noise tracks with commanding beats. Greyhound leave it to the listener to unscramble the emotional message that lies hidden among the noise. A full listening session of a Greyhound album may be as demanding as an intercity ride on a Greyhound bus, as they never tire, never falter from beginning to end, from the opener “Can you feel it?” with its catchy beats up to the claustrophobic last track “Fade Away”. Of course Greyhound’s proclaimed creed of undiluted Industrial is an invented tradition, which is clearly proven by the crisp sound production, but one you will gladly embrace. “Prototype” works on two levels: On the surface it is a two-fisted rhythmic attack, underneath a multi-facetted introspection, a balancing act which seems impossible enough - but is accomplished with ease!

"This album has proven once again that Greyhound is one of the most talented Power Noise/Industrial musicians around today. Complex, hard-hitting, multi-layered, industrial-strength sound sculpture are this album's trademark. Can't get enough from this talented German!" [sk@ds]

Dirty K : Torrent Of Fury [2012]

Dirty K are a thoroughbred Rhythm’n’Noise act based in Leicester (UK) and is one of the latest signing on HANDS. ‘Torrent of Fury’ is surely an eponymous title, because that’s just what this album is: An unsettling intro, followed by 11 tracks of sheer, unadulterated distorted rhythm power. The band want to explicate a personal take on a post-apocalyptic theme based on a vivid dream, incorporating dark and dirty landscapes and buildings. The album is meant to portray a sense of confusion and what it would be like in our to wake up scared and see that is all that is left. Most tracks have a similar structure with an irritating, brooding intro building into rhythmic frenzy in no time. Thankfully, Dirty K never forget to put in the occasional break, short interlude or vocal sample to keep the listener’s attention and give the whole album a very dynamic pace. Of course, lots of DJ food is to be found here, depending on what specific style you’re after: If you want hypnotic midtempo Rhythm’n’Noise, you can’t go wrong with the irresistable dancefloor weapon “Smog Blanket” for example. If you’re after more defined bassdrum sounds in an Industrial Hardcore style, opt for the title track or maybe ‘Frequent Thoughts of Violence’, and if your desire might be pure noise turmoil, a track like ‘Cataclysm’ should make your day. On first listen, ‘Torrent of Fury’ appears as a monolith of fierce sounds and beats, on second listen you find lots of variation and detail. May you enjoy this rich and remarkable debut from the UK – and may God save the Queen from Dirty K’s apocalyptic visions!

Kristoffer Nyströms Orkester : Overlook Hotel [2012]

Kristoffer Nyströms Orkester (KNO) is a collaborative project between Swedish industrial legend Peter Nyström(Megaptera, Negru Voda), and Norwegian Kristoffer Oustad (V:28, Plague Machinery). Their latest release Overlook Hotel is a dark, nightmarish journey through sound.

The description provided for Overlook Hotel is so fitting and perfect;
“KNO welcomes you into the Overlook Hotel, where every room has a ghost and every room has a story to tell. Travel the hallways and explore, as you venture into a more cerebral musical state…”

This statement could not be any closer to the truth. KNO’s Overlook Hotel is forty-four minutes of creepy, ambient soundscapes that will get into your head and haunt you. The album as a whole utilize excellent mixes of noises, creepy sampling and ambient-industrial sounds to move you through the album. Yet each track is unique unto itself and they all work seamlessly together to create an eerie and foreboding journey.

Overlook Hotel is not an album you pop on while you have friends over for tea. It’s the album that you meditate to while going to your “dark place” or what you play to creep out your friends. Trust me, it will creep them out.

Propergol : Ground Proximity Warning System [2006]

Taking two years or so to complete, this release from Jérôme Nougaillon's Propergol project is a twelve tracker that I really wouldn't advise taking with you next time you travel by plane, unless of course you enjoy filling your mind with images of impending disaster whilst sitting in a pressurised tube at 30,000 feet.

The collection of samples, from flight data recorders, air traffic control broadcasts, air to ground communications and various other sources is impressive to say the least, a lot of time and effort gone into locating these and not a minute of it has been wasted.

This album leans more toward the dark ambient side of things than previous Propergol releases, but dont let the term 'ambient' mislead you, focus more on the 'dark' aspect, this is not music to chill out with. The deep, rolling basses coupled with the layered atmospherics and aforementioned samples gradually increase in intensity and volume to dramatic, often cataclysmic effect.

The title track is a fine example of this, starting with a throbbing bass which grows louder and more urgent as the track progresses. The calm, efficient voices of flight crew nursing an injured aircraft home become more excitable and panicked. Suddenly the Ground Proximity Warning System klaxon starts sounding and our feeling of control starts to slip, the flight crews communictions become garbled and a real feeling of dread takes over, you can almost smell the fear. Wonderful, but almost too exhausting to listen to. The end, when it inevitably come is almost a blessed relief. And this is one of the gentler tracks.

A truly stunning piece of work, combining elements of ryhtmic noise, harsh electronics and some sublime bass programming, there is something here for anyone with even a passing interest in the darker side of electronica. Highly recommended.

Metaconqueror : Banishment Of The Unforsaken [2004]

Metaconqueror is J. Stillings the man behind the Power Electronics project Steel Hook Prostheses."Banishment of the Unforsaken" is an impeccable black ambient masterpiece. Everything that is so good about black ambient music is to be found on this recording…and more starting off with an increasingly growing rumble and static mixture it progresses onto a garbled distorted voice then the deep dub echoes and noises begin. Thereafter the music becomes ever more threatening and chilling sending shivers of fear and pleasure running equally down the spine. Its a constant humming, like a ghost who’s hanging over the dungeon like sound fields of the composer. The constant humming is now interrupted by icy noises and than by other sonic manipulations.Played during sunlight it has the capacity to have you hiding behind the sofa with its threatening sonic display. Play it in the dark though…and just watch those nightmares begin.

Mondo Macabro offers the listner a varied journey through the epic and diverse terrain of Des Esseintes. The album opens with two very intense noise filled tracks taken from the Muse 7” released on Fin De Siecle Media in 2000. Both tracks feature searing noise assaults that are accented by classical instrumentation and pulsating industrial rhythms. Beauty wrestles with agonized noise as one consumes the other in a cataclysmic ballad of brutality. Tracks three and four are taken from the Des Esseintes / Negru Voda split 10”. Track three titled “King of the Jungle” unleashes a torrent of angst filled rhythmic industrial music accented by wild howls of savage ferocity. Like a caged animal prodded and tortured Des Esseintes breaks the chains that bind and unleashes his demons. Track four retreats to minimalist domains as isolated industrial rhythms pound lonely beats amidst simple mechanical atmospheres that echo with industrial sounds that reverberate and bend in space. Tracks five through seven are taken from the spilt LP with Magmax and feature gothic tinged industrial that evokes abandoned monasteries and old school horror movie soundtracks. Tracks eight and nine are taken from the on/off 7” and offer a glimpse of Des Esseintes in 2002. Track eight illustrates a maturation in the sound of Des Esseintes that transcends the raw brutality of previous tracks. Elements of dark ambient and cinematic music can be detected as calm moments are cultivated out of churning vortexes of static ad eerie industrial isolationism. Track nine returns the music to its concrete industrial roots as slabs of distorted static drone forth while disembodied voices burst in recusant cycles. Like a short wave radio tuning into faded memories of the past the music slowly churns out a subdued broadcast. After a long passage rhythms impregnate the music before deteriorating into a dark drama of desperation and loss heard in snippets as if left grasping at a fading radio broadcast. Tracks ten and eleven feature two previously unreleased songs that were recorded in 1998. The music is noticeably underdeveloped compared to the other tracks on the album though these two tracks do illustrate the earliest origins of Des Esseintes.

Des Esseintes has welded the force of old school industrial with rhythmic industrial and cinematic music forming a powerful union that delivers both raw aggression and imaginative landscapes filled with rhythms from an apocalyptic tribalism. At times rabid and blind with uncompromising dissent and annihilation and at other times seeking dark grandeur and introspection Des Esseintes is a many headed beast. Mondo Macabro brings perspective and illumination to some of Des Esseintes more obscure releases and rewards the worthy with a concise CD that captures a horde of worthy tracks.

Peter Bjärgö + Gustaf Hildebrand : Out Of The Darkling Light, Into The Bright Shadow (Re-issue) [2012]

Previously released in 2006 as a strictly limited edition on Bjärgö's own label, ErebusOdora, "Out Of The Darkling Light, Into The Bright Shadow" now receives a worthy re-release treatment. Peter Bjargo and Gustaf Hildebrand collaborate on an album that marks a significant departure in style for both parties. Abstract electronic beats and rhythms collide with occultism and brooding ambiances to conjure up images of secret societies, locked away in candle lit chambers below street level, performing rituals the outside worldis blissfully unaware of. A unique fusion of ambient, ritual and electronic elements, it offers a glimpse into a world just out of reach, a world where the state religion was penned by Aleister Crowley and where esoteric symbols have the power to influence both mind and body. Features a previously unreleased bonus track.

Syntech : P'som Sett [2011]

Two years after their well-received debut "Rising From The
Ashes" Syntech release their sophomore album. The cover already
displays the dichotomy that is the core issue of "P'som Sett",
the struggle of nature against the forces of industry û which is
most dangerously manifest in the global destruction of
rainforests (and the species living within) for the sake of
profit. Musically this is reflected in an impulsive clash of
tribal beats vs. machine rhythms, imbedded into dark
atmospheres. The album starts with the gloomy perspective of the
downbeat "Blackest Night Sirens". "Labyrinth" contains all the
features of "P'som Sett" in a nutshell: A wild tempest of beats
and percussions, relentlessly pushing the tune forward, while a
claustrophobic atmosphere permeates the mind - cinematic and
threatening! "Shy" has an almost Trip Hop-like vibe, while the
title track is a more straightforward option for the Industrial
dance floor, as well as the electro-infused "Voltage Boost".

Throughout the album you will find a lot of diversion through
change of rhythmic pace, ethno-flavoured percussive stretches
and melodic fragments deep in the mix. "Whiteout" seems to lead
the album towards a more quiet ending, before the closing title
"Is Not My Problem" assaults the listener with a dehumanized
clutter of noise that devours all structure. Whereas "Rising
From The Ashes" had been a rhythmic monolith that clearly
disclosed the association with Industrial outfit Greyhound
through the dominance of looped, pounding beats, Syntech now
move further into a territory of their own with "P'som Sett".
This album manages to take the listener on a 78-minute journey
that never gets tiring and offers some surprises en route. And -
repeated listening is recommended in order to discover all the
little details to be found within!
