Diary Of Dreams : Ego:X [2011]

As promised, Diary of Dreams have a special treat for you: “Echo in me”, the first new song taken from the upcoming album Ego:X.

Asked about the background of the new song and why it was chosen to be the first to see the light of day, Adrian Hates explained:

“The echo I hear in myself has always been my inspiration to create music, the echo of my daily experiences, the reflection of the things I went through. Therefore, ‘Echo in me’ became some sort of emotional starting point for our new album Ego:X, and while we were working on the production, it was also the first track that felt mature and complete. All good reasons for us to make this the first track to share with you. Of course the song cannot represent the enormous musical variety of the upcoming long player, but anyway, it is a very important song for us as it captures the sound and the power of the album.”

Diary of Dreams is a unique band in that they fuse various genres/styles into their music. Elements of Gothic Rock, Synth Pop, EBM, Industrial, Ambient, and even Classical can be heard in varying degrees in their songs from various albums. Their innovative approach to music making is also accompanied by beautiful, thought-provoking lyrics. On average, their albums are always of high quality compared to most other bands in the Goth scene.  This is the band that almost single-handedly redefines what the term Darkwave means. Of course, the term itself means different things to different people. However, these days when a new band's music is categorized as Darkwave, many (if not most) people who are into the scene will associate it with their music. Theirs is what modern-day Darkwave is all about. Many artists try to copy their style but most fail to achieve their quality and style.

Unlike DoD's previous album Nekrolog 43, this album is not a concept album. After listening to it, I can see why. This album is less electronic or experimental than the previous one. It can be said as more Gothic Rock or some might say 'more mainstream' - in the Goth sense of course. The electronics is noticeably less prominent. In Nekrolog 43 there are some songs that can be categorized as Industrial due to the use of the genre's elements/styles. On the other hand, none of the songs in this new album can be categorized as Industrial or even electronic. The overall quality is still good although not as good as the previous 2 albums. At the end of the day, this album is still better than most Gothic Rock albums released these days. The first song, The Wedding, is my fave out of this release.

"Diary of Dreams is a German electronic goth music group. The lead singer and founding member Adrian Hates has produced most of the albums by himself or with minimal help from others. He rarely uses a full band, except when he is on tour.

Adrian Hates was originally a classically trained guitarist and pianist, and subsquently bassist of Garden of Delight. He initiated the Diary of Dreams project in the late 1980s, taking the name from one of his early classical guitar compositions, 'Tagebuch der Träume'. The first album, 'Cholymelan', appeared in 1994 on the Dion Fortune label.

Encouraged by this success, Adrian formed his own label Accession and released a string of albums over the following years, building a loyal fanbase each step of the way. The second album 'End of Flowers' was released in 1996, expanding on the darkwave sound of the debut. 'Bird Without Wings' followed a year later, whilst the more experimental work 'Psychoma?' arrived in 1998.

The first sign of consolidation came in 1999, when a compilation album 'Moments of Bloom' appeared, containing two reworked tracks from each album. The next two albums 'One of 18 Angels' and 'Freak Perfume' (plus its companion EP 'PaniK Manifesto') made greater use of electronic rhythms, resulting in greater club play and wider recognition for the band.

Their 2004 'Nigredo' (a concept album inspired by a mythology the band designed themselves) saw a move back towards the more subtle, sparse concepts of old, but still featuring bursts of their more recent, danceable sound. Songs from the Nigredo tour were later released on the live CD 'aLive' and the companion DVD 'Nine In Numbers'. The most recent Diary of Dreams album 'Nekrolog 43' was released in 2007, offering a greater variety of moods and concepts than previous works."
