Chrysalide : Don't Be Scared, It's About Life [2011]

The self-proclaimed electro-punk-noize-terrorists Chrysalide have returned with their second full-length album, “Don’t Be Scared, It’s About Life” – and what a release this album is! Though many people will make obvious Skinny Puppy comparisons (a great deal of this being how eerily close the vocals seem on some songs), this album is no mere clone.

The whole of “Don’t Be Scared, It’s About Life” is jarring, intense and powerful and continually keeps you on edge. It provides aggressive, angry, punky electronics throughout, but also provides the listener with enough variety and ‘softer’ moments so that your ears are not completely bled out by the time you’re done listening to the album. Each successive listen shows a new element or sound I didn’t pick up previously, like the subtle orchestral sounds in “They Won’t Get Us”, the slightly Asian influences in the track “Cybernetic Babies”, or the dubstep elements found in “I Do Not Divert Eyes”. Also, soft piano melodies on some songs provide a sharp contrast to overwhelming aggression and anger. There are few introspective songs dispersed throughout to give your ears some rest, such as “Lizzie and the Charming Prince” and “Lovetape”. No matter what the song, though, there is always an element of madness, fear and a menacing aura in each track – sometimes it’s just below the surface, other times it hits you right in the face.

Skin Area : Rothko Field [2012]

I’ve known and enjoyed IRM-related project Skin Area’s work for a good many years. They excel in extreme, punishing noise and Power Electronics coupled with a Dark Ambient sensibility for sonic dynamics. This third album, now on Malignant Records, is something of a departure for them; while no less intense in concept or execution, this album journeys through No-Wave drone guitar noise with the solemnity of Black Metal, droning electronic waves, Industrial pounding, delicate melody, Power Electronics shouted vocals and softly-sung words.

So it’s not a stretch to say this is a deeply interesting album, a journey, a passage through a series of mental states and situations. Moving through the fields of influence of abstract sensations? Rothko is the kind of artist to evoke these wildly separated but fractally connected sensations; his imposing, overpowering blocks of colour that bore right into you, particularly in his commission pieces for the Four Seasons restaurant, match these monolithic but changeable feelings.

Control : The Resistance [2012]

Control is Thomas Garrison from Santa Cruz who works as a
branding/body modification artist and as a mastering engineer
at his own misanthrope studio and has also initiated the
industrial/ambient project Exsanguinate. He made a name as one
of the finest American power electronics acts since the end of
the nineties with a multitude of releases and highly regarded
live performances in Europe and the U.S.. what emerges Control
in the power noise category is his obviously strong ability to
construct tracks that are extremely aggressive, but with shifts
that create contrast and texture rather than just constant
attack: the produced tracks are memorable and deeply loaded. He
transcends the pure rage associated with power electronics and
reveals the darker, more infectious and sinister emotions that
build that fury. Control's work is so conscious of creating mood
and atmosphere that it almost defies the genre that it caters
to.

'The Resistance' offers a good balance of densely layered
forceful electronics with dark ambient undercurrents,
occasionally rhythmic pulses and offensive vocals filtered
through diverging effects. The voice is never used as an
overbearance or focal point, but as one of the many aural
textures. Control never sacrifices the music or the emotional
weight on the altar of rhetoric - it is his intention to arouse
the listener with almost cinematic moods, creating a sonic
environment where nothing good seems possible for people who
might inhabit it. Control has moved to the top of the power
electronics pantheon for good reason. He is talented enough to
accumulate power noise with death/ambient industrial and to
create fascinating arcs of suspense, making you pay attention
until the last second. His passion for detail means full focus
is required - a must for maximum appreciation.

Xenonics K-30 : Automated [2002]

...automated uses trademark stamp of "power electronics" merely as a tool, as one of the music devices. in its best moments the album acquires a quality of a soundtrack, building almost cinematic atmosphere that at times explodes with unbridling violence of clashing noisy blasts, or slowly builds a droning heavy textures out of shifting hydraulics, processed heavy machinery, cold vibrating frequencies, and even a string here and there among the clouds of dark electronics. you might have to pick and choose, hunting moments here and there, but for some reason (perhaps because by this time the atmosphere has settled in, or because they are indeed different) last four tracks are my favorite, varying between merciless power rhythms of dyplastoid and incredibly mesmerizing heavy sci-fi textures of G.M.A.S. (an absolute favorite of mine)

Goatvargr : Black Snow Epoch [2010]

...the second sonorous calving coming from the reproductive session (just musical one!) between Henrik "Nordvargr" Bjorkk, a Swedish sound adulterator - maybe some of you have already listened something signed under other pseudonyms such as MaschinenZimmer 412, Hydra Head 9, Folkstorm or Toroidh (my favorite one, maybe for some musical nuances close to Raison d'Etre releases) -, quite famous for his artistic fruitfulness in the so-called "grey area" for being one of the first sound-artists dealing with the so-called "black industrial" music (something which some reviewer names "dark ambient" as well nowadays), whose nickname means "northern wolf", and the American noise artist Andy O'Sullivan aka Goat, whose researches are more noise-oriented as well, giving to birth this freaky creature called Goatvargr - you can imagine some bestial character, whose body is half-goat and half-wolf... -, which musically could stand as a sort of alternative path towards the thick woods of power electronics, black metal and cinematic ritual drones.
